My Opinion:
I loved learning more about Harriet Tubman. For a long time I have admired her and I loved learning more about her in this way. I am not a lover of history. Actually it was my least favorite subject in school, but Kathi writes in a way that make history come alive. The rest of the story was good also though the Harriet Tubman parts where, in my opinion, sometimes too far apart. I think I would have liked Mazie's story more if I could have related to her more, but sadly I could not. This is a wonderful book, at times frustrating at sometimes beautiful. In the end Kathi wrapped up with the message that I so desired to come out in the story. The past does not define you unless you let it, your ancestors are not you. Lean on God for He sent His Son so that the past no longer matters. Let Him set you free.
I compliment Kathi on her writing and making history as exciting, inspiring, and interesting as it should be written. I must also compliment (I think) New Hope publishing. The format of the book is something I've never seen before and I LOVE it! The page numbers location is fabulous, the chapter your on is written at the top of every page instead of the name of the author, and the page decoration is lovely.

Prologue

Edward’s eyes captivated her, as they always did. She felt as if she were gazing into warm, chocolate pools, bidding her to abandon herself to their delicious charms. And oh, how she wanted to do so! But something—always, there was that awkward, inconvenient something—holding her back, restraining her from yielding to the joy she so longed to experience.

“I can’t,” she whispered. “I just can’t. Not yet. Soon, I promise, but…”

The light in his gaze flickered, and she knew she’d hurt him…again. She hadn’t wanted to, had even told herself that this time, today, she would give him her answer. But she just wasn’t ready.

Her heart squeezed. Would she ever be? The unreasonable fear that haunted her life loomed heavy, threatening to squeeze the air from her lungs. Was it more than their obvious differences that frightened her to the point where she couldn’t move forward, couldn’t give a good man a simple answer—particularly when that man made her head swim with longing?

She felt the resignation roll through his body as he loosened his embrace and took a small step back, his eyes never leaving hers. “I wish I could say I understand, but I don’t.” His smile was wistful as he used a finger to brush back a stray wisp of dark hair from her face. “But I will honor your feelings. I know I need to stop pushing, and I will, though it won’t be easy. I love you, Mazie. You know that. But sooner or later, we’re going to have to address this—once and for all.”

Her breath caught, and she nodded. If she knew anything in this world, it was that Edward Clayton loved her, and that he was an honorable and patient man. He wouldn’t push her, but she was a fool for putting him off. Still, how could she give him an answer when she was so unsure about how the unknowns of her past might impact their future?

“Thank you,” she whispered. “For loving me and for giving me more time.”

The pain skittered through his eyes again, outlined by the setting sun that filtered through the trees behind him. He leaned down and planted a soft kiss on her forehead. “Let me know when you’re ready.” He turned and walked toward his car, leaving Mazie standing alone on the porch, with the first of many hot tears spilling over onto her cheeks.

My Opinion:
This is a wonderful story! I wanted to read this because I love to read books set around the civil war. Books along this time line, and this one to, are usually filled with healing and forgiveness. I love Rosemary because I can relate to her (with her dog and all LOL!). As she goes through the story she experiences rejection, persecution, pain, fear, love, deception, faith, hope, and kindness. Ann Shorey paints a wonderful picture. I loved learning a little bit more about certain herbs and what they help with. I wish it didn't end and kept going on. I want to read more about these characters and see how their lives progress! I was afraid when I reached the final pages that it would leave me hanging or end abruptly and leave me dissatisfied. But when you read an author like Ann Shorey you will not be disappointed. Up to the very last sentence she had me laughing and enjoying her work. A wonderful story written beautifully! I can't wait to read what happens next.

Please tell us a little about yourself (your Bio):

I’m a Southern California girl, born and raised, though I’ve also lived in Amarillo, Houston, Colorado Springs, and LaCenter/Longview, WA. My husband and I currently live in a retirement community in a little unincorporated area called Homeland, about midway between LA and San Diego. I wasn’t raised in a Christian home but became a believer at the age of 26. I’ve been in love with words since I first discovered them and have always been an avid reader. I published my first book in 1988 and have now published about 40 books. I always wanted to be a writer but NEVER wanted to be a speaker. Now I travel/speak/teach almost as much as I write—and I love it! Just goes to show that God’s plans for us are so much better than our own.

What is your favorite Bible verse?

Tough to pick just one, but I suppose it would be Deut. 8:1: “Every commandment which I command you TODAY you must be careful to observe that you might live and prosper and go in and possess the land” (emphasis mine). I love this reminder that my only requirement is to be faithful (to love God and others, which encompasses all the other commandments) TODAY, and then He will bless me in whatever way He has purposed for my life.

What fun thing can you tell us about yourself that we don't know?

Most people don’t know that I once worked with former football star Rosey Grier, aka the “gentle giant.” He was indeed a mountain of a man, but a kind and gentle one with a generous heart. When we were together working on a project at some restaurant or something, if people came up to us he’d often introduce me as his bodyguard. We got some very amusing reactions to that!

What do you enjoy doing when you're not writing?

Sleeping. Seriously! I’m either writing, thinking about writing, editing, marketing, preparing to speak about something I’ve written…you get the idea. But I’m cutting back on the insane schedule when my husband retires the end of March and I turn in my last tightly-contracted project. I’m not retiring, but I’m definitely scaling back to the point where I can take some time to smell the roses, as they say. (That will no doubt include reading other people’s writing, as reading is my favorite pastime.)

How did you become involved in writing?

As I’ve already mentioned I’ve always loved reading. When I was a child and ran out of things to read, I started writing my own story. A story I wrote in the third grade was so well received by my teacher and principal that they turned it into a play for the entire student body and PTA. I was hooked! From then on out I took every writing/English/journalism-related class offered in junior or senior high. I also took some journalism classes from USC and ended up writing a weekly column and doing some string reporting for a local newspaper. From there—after becoming a Christian at 26—I branched out into writing articles for magazines and newsletters. Soon after that I got a job at Gospel Light Publishing/Regal Books, where I published my first book, a woman’s devotional, which had outstanding sales. I’ve had my foot in the writing/publishing world to one extent or another ever since.

Where do you write? Do you have a dedicated office or nook in a room?

Yes, I have a little office area inside my house, but also a full office attached to the house as well. I got into the habit of writing in the little nook inside the house when my mom was alive and living with us. Her health wasn’t good so I needed to be close by. Now that she’s “graduated to heaven,” I’m in the very slow, long, drawn-out process of transitioning into the outside office, which may not happen until after my husband retires and I have someone at home to help me make the move.

Can you use 3 words that describe you?

I’ll choose the ones I hear from others about me most often: encouraging, cheerful, faithful. Because I live in my own skin and know me better than anyone except God, I cringe at those descriptions because I know how short I fall much of the time. But I also know that God has gifted me with those very traits, and it is His Spirit living in me that others see.

Do you always know the title of your books before you write them?

Usually. Once in a while I tweak them when I’m done (or my publisher might, for one reason or another), but most have remained the same from initial idea to published book.

I also pray the background story of the amazingly courageous and faith-filled Harriet Tubman will inspire readers to “put feet to their faith” and walk out what they say they believe, regardless of challenges or difficulties.

Where did you get the idea for The Moses Quilt?

Harriet Tubman has always been one of my personal heroes, so it’s not unusual that I would at some point want to build a story around her. When my publisher and I decided to launch a series about women in American history who made a difference because of their faith and courage, Harriet Tubman was the perfect place to start. I then came up with a contemporary story that could be told against the background of Harriet Tubman’s life. That concept laid the groundwork not only for The Moses Quilt but for the entire three-book series.

Did you have to do research?

Absolutely! I thought I knew about Harriet Tubman, but I discovered I knew only the bare essentials of her life. I was blown away with the additional information I learned about her! I also had to research Gee’s Bend, AL, and the famous quilters who live there. I REALLY want to go there one day!

How long have you been writing? When did you sell your first book?

I’ve been writing since I was a child, but for publication since I was in my early twenties (eons ago!). My first book, a woman’s devotional, published in 1988, followed by my first novel in 1989.

What are you working on now?

I am writing the third and final book in The Quilt Series. It will release in Spring 2014. It’s called The Singing Quilt because it is based on the life of the “Queen of Gospel,” Fanny Crosby. Book two in the series, The Doctor’s Christmas Quilt, is based on the life of the first woman doctor in America, Elizabeth Blackwell. It releases in October 2014.

What message do you hope readers take away from The Moses Quilt?

That there is no fear or challenge too great to overcome if God has called you to it. It’s all about taking God at His Word and living accordingly.

My Opinion:
Really great book!!! There are (I think) three main reasons why I loved this book...1.) It is written the way I would have written it if I was telling the story. 2.) Loree writes in a way that feels like your just having a conversation with an old dear friend. 3.) Her style is smooth, even paced, and lovely; filled with her quick wit. Her writing is very clever. The Beautiful Bandit is a unique tale that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer right up til the end. There was a handful of typos, but this is easily over looked. I love the characters and the stories behind them. Sometimes I got a little twisted around when a lot of different new things came out about the character's past at once, but Lorre explains you through them in time. I would love to see where Lough takes the characters, especially the other cousins. Over all I love the fact that Lorre doesn't tip toe around real life happenings. Tragedy and trauma are woven through this book just as she said it would in her letter at the beginning; which you must make sure you read also! :)

Writing a three book historical romance series was farthest thing from Penny Zeller's mind a few years ago when the car she and her family were traveling in collided with another vehicle in West Yellowstone going about 50 mph.

My Opinion:
This book is as good if not better than I had hoped it would be. The story is unique and I must admit that I loved it so much that I immediately plunged into the sequel "Kaydie". Though there are times I can't relate to McKenzie I still really grew to love her character (and I also found there where times when I saw myself in her personality). But I still think she's completely insane to want to leave a man like Zach! LOL! Personally I think that every mother out there needs to buy this book for themselves and then have there sons read it! If every bachelor read this book and behaved just a little more like Zach this dark world would be a far better place and maybe I wouldn't be single! HA! But I digress. Back to the book. McKenzie is amazing! I love the way Penny writes the character's prayers and the way she weaves God's Holy word in with her own. They are both real, conversational, and flawless. Filled with twists and surprises I was shocked at times, and laughed wholeheartedly at others! My recommendation is to get the whole series, curl up on a comfy piece of furniture, and tuck in for some REALLY great reads!

Oh and you may need some music to go with that! : "Sweet Hour Of Prayer" by The Cluster Pluckers and "Mine All Mine" by Shedaisy compliment this book well I think!

My Opinion:
Penny has done it again! Kaydie is a great book! While there are some gut wrenching moments, as well as moments I was just shaking my head at Kaydie's way of thinking, Penny has captured my imagination and attention beautifully. Jonah is wonderful, a gentleman that loves deeply, and makes you wish that you new a man just like him. The children will steal your heart, and the rest of the characters will keep you chuckling to the end. Penny's way of adding prayer and scripture is just right. Woven into the story in such a real way she gives just enough of each! I love the way the story line progresses and the action is paced flawlessly. This book will take you to the edge of temptation, love, and possible sadness!

I can't wait to read Hailee and see where Penny will take us next! A great book from a great series that must be read!

My Opinion:
As the third book in the Montana Skies series I enjoyed the fact that it wrapped up as well as caught me up with all of my favorite characters. Hailee is a sweet book with a wonderful message, but I didn't really get into the book until towards the end. Penny throws in twists and action as the story goes on though that captured me completely! As well as keeping the characters I grew to love; she adds more characters that stole my heart right away (including two red headed twins)! As always she entwines scripture and prayer in her story flawlessly, and the message that the book holds can not be missed! While Hailee is no my favorite in the series I still enjoyed it and would recommend this whole series. Hailee is a wonderful addition to Pine Haven. A great book in a Must READ series! :)

Please tell us a little about yourself (your Bio): Thank you so much for having me as your guest, Amada. I’m thrilled to be here!

I am the author of several books, including McKenzie, Kaydie, and Hailee in the Montana Skies Historical Romance Series and my most recent nonfiction book, 77 Ways Your Family Can Make a Difference. I have also written numerous magazine articles in national and regional publications on a variety of topics ranging from inspirational, health, current events, people profiles, parenting, and how-to articles. I also author the blog A Day in the Life of a Wife, Mom, and Author.

I am an active volunteer in my community, devoting my time to assisting and nurturing women and children into a closer relationship with Christ.

What is your favorite Bible verse? I have two favorite Bible verses, a short one and a long one.  My favorite short verse is Psalm 19:14 while my favorite long verse is the entire verse of Psalm 91.

What fun thing can you tell us about yourself that we don't know? Many people don’t know that I met my husband through a prank phone call while we were in high school. Funny, but true! 

What do you enjoy doing when you're not writing? When I’m not writing, I enjoy playing volleyball, camping, hiking, canoeing, reading, gardening, and spending time with my family.

How did you become involved in writing? Great question! I have wanted to be a writer since I was seven years old. I rewrote Bible stories – my own little grade school commentary of sorts. Later in elementary school, I wrote more stories and “published” them in homemade cardboard wallpaper “books.” I also placed in the Young Authors contest and published my first poem. Fast forward to the year 2000, when I started writing magazine articles, followed by books.

Where do you write? Do you have a dedicated office or a corner or nook in a room? I have an office in our home with a large window and a fireplace. I love my office, but right now (just between us) it needs a bit of organization!

Can you use 3 words that describe you? Wow! Fun question! Let’s see, I would say loyal, silly, and sensitive.

Do you always know the title of your books before you write them? Most of the time I know the titles before I write my books, although the titles are usually only “working titles” and can change as the story progresses.

What do you hope readers takeaway after reading this book? The biggest theme of this book is that God can and does change hearts, even the most selfish of hearts.

Where did you get the idea for McKenzie? I’ve always been intrigued by mail-order bride stories from the 1800s. After a car accident, followed by back-to-back bacterial infections for seven months, my normally extremely active lifestyle came to an abrupt halt. It was during that time that I sat down and did something I’ve always wanted to do – write historical romance. The Lord took something bad and used it for good.

Did you have to do research? Yes. I spend a lot of time doing research for my historical romance novels. It’s much like a half hour of writing, 15 minutes of research, a half hour of writing, 15 minutes of research… I have also had the privilege of visiting historical places and viewing numerous historical photos, which I absolutely love.

How long have you been writing? When did you sell your first book? I have loved to write since I was in second grade. My first book, a children’s picture book, was published in 2003.

What are you working on now? I’m working on two different three-book series, one set in Nebraska just after the Civil War, and the other set in the late 1800s in the Wyoming Territory.

What advice would you give to writers just starting out? God calls us all to do different things for His Kingdom. If He has called you to write, seek His guidance. Never give up, even when you feel like it or when someone has unkindly criticized you. Seek to please and honor Him in whatever you write, whether it be for the secular or nonsecular market; whether it be fiction, nonfiction, poetry, song lyrics, or a screenplay. Find a mentor and be open to ideas and suggestions from one who’s “been there, done that.” One final note, join forces with other Christian writers.  After all, we are all working for the same Boss.

What encouragement could you give to writers who are playing the 

waiting game to get published? That can be such a difficult time. You’ve worked hard on a manuscript and then you must wait, wait, wait for that day when you receive a response. I would encourage writers to continue writing during that time, whether on the same project or a different project.

My Opinion:

Wanda has my attention! I will admit when I got this book and I saw how small it is I was confused. I thought I had only received part of the first book, and how am I going to review that! After doing my research I learned that, no, the first book is only 8 chapters long. I love this though because it's just the right amount to leave you hanging! LOL! (plus the book is so cute) Anyway you might think that's a bad thing, but when it's from an author that is as imaginative and as good a writer as Wanda E. Brunstetter then you see how brilliant it is. I MUST read what happened next!!! Slipping in twists that you didn't see coming and leaving you longing for more. I love this little book, I can't wait to read what's next, and I think that this is a MUST READ!!! :) Filled with a unique and exciting story line this is going to get good!
