The Courier of Caswell Hall (American tapestries) Review!!!

The Courier of Caswell Hall

by Melanie Dobson

Book Description:
About the book: An unlikely spy discovers freedom and love in the midst of the American Revolution.

As the British and Continental armies wage war in 1781, the daughter of a wealthy Virginia plantation owner feels conflict raging in her own heart. Lydia Caswell comes from a family of staunch Loyalists, but she cares only about peace. Her friend Sarah Hammond, however, longs to join the fight. Both women's families have already been divided by a costly war that sets father against son and neighbor against neighbor; a war that makes it impossible to guess who can be trusted.

One snowy night Lydia discovers a wounded man on the riverbank near Caswell Hall, and her decision to save him will change her life. Nathan introduces her to a secret network of spies, couriers, disguises, and coded messages---a network that may be the Patriots' only hope for winning the war. When British officers take over Caswell Hall and wreak havoc on neighboring plantations, Lydia will have to choose between loyalty and freedom; between her family's protection and her own heart's desires.

As both armies gather near Williamsburg for a pivotal battle, both Lydia and Sarah must decide how high a price they are willing to pay to help the men they love.

Part of the American Tapestries™ series: Each standalone novel in this line sets a heart-stirring love story against the backdrop of an epic moment in American history. This is the fifth book in the series.

My Opinion:
It's made My Favorite Books List!!!  I never really enjoyed history in school.  It just wasn't my thing, but The Courier of Caswell Hall takes historical events and fictional characters, and marries them to bring out a beautiful adventure.  I learned SO much that I never realized or knew about the Revolutionary War!  And I felt the pains, frustrations, and anger from the time are expressed nicely.  The past and future wrap together as I read the events that transpired in the lives of these characters, and see how they are formed into the people God created them to be.  Surprise after surprise and sorrow in the midst of joy fill the pages as the characters lives intertwined.  This is one of those books that is awesome to look back and remember how it all began, and maybe even to read again and again!  Bouncing from one lead character to the next they all meet and mix at some point as they try to live in a world turned upside down by war.  Melanie does something that I've always LOVED an author to do; she wraps up every character and ties up every end.  After I finished I never felt like I didn't know where a character ended up.  Though I feel the ending is sweetly sad I highly recommend reading this book.  From the tobacco fields, to a captured ship, to a ball Courier of Caswell Hall leads you through it all!  Happiness, sadness, romance, courage, and triumph are just the beginning!

Songs that I think fit: "Concerto for flute, violin, harpsichord, BWV 1044: II. Adagio ma non tanto e dolce" by Murray Perahia,
"When All Thy Mercies, O My God" by Choir Of Yorkminster Park Baptist Church,
"Minuet" by Luigi Boccherini (1743-1805),
"First of May (Jig)" by Rob Hobkirk,
"Trio for Flute, Violin and Harp: III. Polo (de Falla)" by Southwest Chamber Music, members,
"He Leadeth Me" by The Cluster Pluckers,
"In The Sweet By And By" by The Cluster Pluckers,
"Rock Of Ages" by Chris Rice,
and I personally think in a few ways this last hymn fits "O Freedom" by Chris Rice

Matthew 25:35-40
